  • How much do I love writing papers as an English Major.

Throughout my time in school, whether that was elementary, middle, high school, and college I realized how much papers are made towards writing them in hopes that the professor/teacher likes them, because if you format the paper the way the person whom is grading it writes, you are likely to get a good grade. I remember in grade school I would write boring papers, argumentative essays, papers about. question or book that I was not super interested in until I got to college. while I still do get bored writing some papers I grew to love writing papers about Shakespeare plays, American and British Literature, and etc. I still had some trouble when writing a paper on one word, yes one word. or on a reading I just did not enjoy but it also helped me. I wrote a paper about the Life of an Enslaved Girl by Harriet Jacobs and I think that was one of my best papers I wrote in college, it had quotes, it was an important story to write about and read.

My writing has really evolved from high school to college because I have become better at not just reading the story and then closing the book, but close reading certain paragraphs to understand the reading fully. which in return makes my writing better because I can analyze quotes better and use the correct quotes in my papers. The fun thing about writing literary analysis is that you get to understand the story or passage in a deeper meaning and gets you to use your brain, sure it makes me exhausted at times but I am learning so much. I still have some difficulty if I were analyzing a poem and then writing about it because I sometimes read it differently each time reading the poem, if that makes sense. all in all I learned to love writing so much, no matter how difficult it may be at times, I want to challenge myself to become a better writer.

  • Is Gen AI actually helpful

While I personally do not see the use of chatgpt and gen ai in answering a question in class I can see how it is helpful. the n I put the title of the reading we had to the day it gave me an entire “academic style” summary , giving me facts about things like menopause, hysteria, and aging in the reading. it did give some great facts but I still do not see how you cannot get all the informations from reading the text, and if you are confused just search up a word or phrase.

this reading really had a lot of descriptive words when talking about a woman’s body, I remember it using words that sounded frightening and how the entire story pretty much made hysteria and other woman health problems as a not “real” thing, which was common during the victorian era, it made me think about Bertha Mason in “Jane Eyre” as well as “Wide Sargasso Sea” while both of these stories did not connect with our reading the telling of a woman who is “crazy” and is locked away has a similarity to this reading since women in the victorian era were seen as “crazy” or blaming the uterus for the way they are acting.

  • Different ways motherhood is shown

Both “Motherhood” and “The Mother” shows the different ways a mother grieves a child that they never had, to help make sure the mother is healthy as well as the baby. Motherhood shows a mother grieving her unborn child, not being able to let the child out of her (whether that is figuratively or literally) because of how the world is in this day, the world one day was so cruel to this woman that she is fearful of bringing a child she may have always wanted into the world.

The second story has a similar meaning, in “The Mother” we read of a woman who has had many abortions, grieving and seeing how she will never be able to meet the children she aborted. The line ” Abortion will not let you forget” is such a powerful opening to this poem, so many women have to get abortions for different health reasons to protect the mother and in a way protect the unborn child. It really stuck out to me because a lot of times you hear from people speaking on a woman’s body and if it was good or bad for them to get an abortions but in the end it is the woman’s body and these women still grieve the child. They still love the baby the same amount as if the child was alive. This was a gut wrenching read, both of them were, because it is real life experiences that happen to so many women.

  • The Awakening

This is my second time reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin but it continues to shock me on how much women are depicted in society and how certain stereotypes of women are still used in today’s society. Our main character of the story, Edna, is seen as a less motherly figure, because she is not seen taking care of her kids every second of every day and wanting a bit of independence from her husband. On the other hand one of her good friends Mrs. Ratignoelle is seen as the typical Motherly figure, worshiping her husband as well as her children, which is what is known during the victorian era.

Connecting these women to how women are treated nowadays. beginning with Mrs. Ratignoelle, although a mother should care for her kids and significant other, it is very stereotypical for a woman to be a stay at home mom just like her and only care for your husband/kids, never truly making a life for yourself, which is still taught nowadays in certain households. The same can be sad for the type of woman that Edna is, many mothers, fathers, and husbands would scorn a woman like edna for wanting to have some indolence since it is so normalized for women to devote their lives to only their kids and husbands. Both of these women have a hard time in victorian society.

  • tomboy reactions

Tomboy by Liz Prince had me hooked from the beginning. I love a little graphic novel, so let me just say that. Liz Prince was a tomboy since she was a young girl, a lot of people say that this may just be a phase that she was going through, because this even happened to me at a young age. The difference is that Liz continues to be a Tomboy as she grows up. This short novel shows so many real life situations that happens to young girls. When a mother has a baby girl they want to boy them so many dresses, doll houses, makeup, etc, meanwhile the girl and so many other girls want to play with toys that are more “boy toys” (although…. to me there’s really no boy or girl toys because anyone can play with them).

in chapter 4 it was so important for Liz to find other girls in her grade that are more tomboy and can stick up liz as well as themselves. Especially during the scene when liz and her friends are called lesbians by the middle school boys. I would really like to read the rest of this graphic novel to see what else liz is up to in life and see if she changes at all out of a tomboy or stays a tomboy

  • The Goblin Market

This was my third time reading Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti. I continue to see how scary it is to be a woman, like Laura or lizzie in a society where they can be tempted by little goblin men into sucking fruit from them and it bringing pain towards the women in the end. When I first read this story, I had trouble finding any sort of symbolic meaning, because of how long it was, but as I saw what both lizzie and Laura go through, I began to see the symbolism of gender roles specifically in the era this was written, as well as sisterhood/womanhood. The goblin men in this story are seen as evil, tempting men, covering up their evilness with selling delicious, juicy, sweet fruit, to women , the fruit in this story symbolizes temptation that the women feel when these goblin men approach them with the fruit.

The women in this story can at first just be seen as fragile, naive, but in the end I think both are equally strong. Although lizzie does eat the fruit from the goblins, Laura will do anything for her to be back in good health, so she goes and pretty much risks her life to make her sister feel better by sucking the juices off of the goblin men and bringing it back to lizzie, so that she can be brought back to life. This shows how the sisterhood between both girls is stronger than the temptation of the goblin men.

  • What I want to get out of this class and what I enjoy

My name is Julianna or jules. My major is secondary English education. I am 22 Years old and on my last year of college before I begin student teaching. My academic interests / Hobby is reading, One of my favorite academic readings that I can remember is reading The Yellow Wallpaper by Charolette Gilman. But I also enjoy non-academic reading, right now I am re-reading all of the Percy Jackson books and I’m enjoying it a lot. i also love watching tv shows / movies, some of my favorites are Percy Jackson, Bridgeton, Anne with an e, etc. My plans for the future is to be a middle/highschool teacher and maybe in the long run go back to school to become a professor!

Some stuff I want to take away from this class is to challenge myself by reading books that may be more challenging for me to read, for instance the first book we are reading for class is a little challenging with all of the flashbacks and different point of views but I still enjoy it. Another thing I am excited about but also nervous about is the 15 page paper due at the end of the semester, this will be the longest paper I have written so while I am a little scared, I am also again, excited to challenge myself by researching new things, writing on the topic, and challenging myself with writing more than I normally do.
